Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is a sci-fi action adventure that lives up to its genre. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It didn’t get 4 stars because of the simplicity and slight predictability of this story. However, it did not warrant 2 stars because the story did have a lot of action that pulls you into the story and wanting to know what happens next – even though you may be able to guess the next step the story is taking.

The story is about a young woman who was betrayed by her fiancé and finds herself on a mission started by her grandfather years before accompanied by an artificially intelligent ship he built. It is now up to her and her ship, Solaris, to save her planet and her people. With the help of strangers from different times, Rynah travels through space to collect the six crystals that can save her world. Rynah’s ex-fiance is also looking for the crystals as it was his betrayal that started her mission. It seems he will stop at nothing to obtain them, which makes him dangerous. The group of unlikely heroes meet adventure they never thought possible and learn they are more alike than they thought.

This book is full of action starting from the beginning. It kept me coming back to find out what happens next. While I loved the action, the writing and story seem geared toward the young adult sci-fi reader rather than a more advanced reader. The personalities of the characters grow at different points, but you only get pulled into the dynamic of a select few where the character is developed to the point that you truly care about what happens to that character.

The development of the ship as a character was interesting and fun, however, the title, Solaris Seethes, doesn’t seem to fit the story. Solaris definitely has attitude, but she seemed to be the glue that kept the story moving forward. The title suggested an anger or vendetta that I did not find from Solaris, but rather from Rynah. The betrayal she experienced and the tumultuous relationship with her grandfather caused her feelings to control many of her actions and decisions. The pull she has to finish his mission now seems to cause a conflict within her as well. These feelings seemed to cause her to keep the other characters at a distance until she finds a connection with them.

I truly enjoyed the story and will definitely be reading the second installment. Solaris Seethes definitely leaves you wanting to know what’s happening next.
