Review by Nikowl7 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in the ‘We are Voulhire’ series by Mathew Tysz. The story has already progressed. In this stage, we find our heroes, Galen, Dimitrius and Rowan travelling to the city of Virko. Virko is considered the heart of the industrial revolution in the Voulhire land. Power struggles among the antagonist lords of this magnificent city are intense. Politics, economy and magic all cohabit in the same city. We introduced new characters and we meet again some familiar ones. The threat hanging over Voulhire is even more ominous than before.
I was hooked from the first page! After finishing the first book I could not help but move to the next one as quickly as I could. What an amazing continuation of a remarkable and in many aspects unique story. Tysz knows how to arouse our senses and poke our interest once again. First of all, he resumes the story with a very bold start. In an instant, the reader emerges to the storyline once again. In my opinion, this is an ability that few writers possess. Tysz is definitely one of them. Another aspect I found quite fascinating was the character development from the first book. Galen is already beginning to settle down to his new home, whereas in other characters, like Meldorath, we see another feature we have not seen in the previous book. The portrayal of both new and old characters is captivating. Another part I liked was that Magic came more into focus in this book. Being a fan of fantasy books, I was really thrilled by this approach. As we witness from the first book, Tysz does not hesitate to provoke the reader with his daring way of writing. In many parts of the book, especially towards the end, I was positively surprised by how the plot was progressing.
On the other hand, in the same parts, I found the language unnecessarily vulgar and too descriptive. Moreover, the interchange in the narrative was a little tiring and it made me lose focus. The jumps between one hero to others were sometimes confusing. Nevertheless, I truly great story!
In my opinion, this book is more suitable for adults, because of the intense usage of profane language.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars mainly because some parts are unnecessarily slow, and I cannot quite understand where the story is heading. Still, it has lots of compelling aspects worth exploring and I cannot wait to read the next book!
