Review by catty2020 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the saga of Voulhire. The journey continues for Galen Bray, the refugee blacksmith from the Land of Princes. After the attack on Hillport, the city of Magnum Caelum has lost their contact for iron ore and Galen sets out to Virko in search of a new source for the city. Virko is a prosperous capitalistic city on the verge of a leadership change, but not the change they are expecting. Galen, Rowan and Demetrius are in for an incredibly shocking adventure.
Meldorath has not been idle after the attack on Hillport and his escape from his island prison. His plotting and scheming is continuing, much to the dismay of the Eiodi. How far will his ambitions go and what will the consequences be?
New characters are introduced both in Virko and Yamon Soul. Kayden, a young lord in the city of Virko with a new baby on the way and Lord Hans the only son of Virko’s sovereign. In Yamon Soul we meet Sasha Gadesh, the Eiodi. Each have their role to play in this exciting new tale.
Once again Matthew Tysz has done an incredible job of capturing your attention and keeping it for every page. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Yes, this is a far different perspective than my review of the first book but I now understand the method to his madness, and I love it. I cannot wait to continue this series. He has a way of drawing you in and keeping you wanting, but in a marvelously captivating way. His writing is smooth and fluid and makes perfect sense. There is nothing I disliked about this book.
Matthew Tysz explores magic, science and religion as individual aspects and as a combined aspect. Some believe that each should stand on it’s own and that one is more powerful that the other. Matthew shows how combining the strengths of each and how working together instead of against each other can be a very powerful tool.
This book was also extremely well edited with no grammar errors or typos. There were 11 instances of profanity but once again they were in keeping with the story line. There is a slant towards homosexuality but nothing detailed, so anyone that is easily offended by this subject please be forewarned. I think anyone that loves fantasy will love this series. The characters are absolutely wonderful. Some are honest, decent, good people, some are vile, despicable, twisted villains, and some are right there in the middle letting you make up your own mind.
I think Matthew Tysz is an incredible author and I anxiously look forward to reading more of his work.
