Breakers by Barry Litherland is a paranormal crime thriller based in a fictional small town on the coast of Scotland. The story begins with Billy, a fisherman who tries to make a living in a town where the fishing industry is almost dead. To try to keep afloat he gets himself into some shady business that ends up becoming really dangerous for the whole town. The story starts unfolding through the eyes of different townspeople, such as an English incomer, a detective and his partner or the minister, in the hope to resolve the mystery of what is happening in that moment and what happened in the same town two hundred years ago.
As if that wasn’t enough some paranormal things start happening and they have to decide whether to keep their sanity or believe in the impossible.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because the book is very well written and it shows a personal style of writing by Litherland but even though I enjoyed following all the characters perspectives in some cases I would have preferred to know more from just a couple of them instead of just a bit from all of them. There aren’t huge surprises in the plot but the story is interesting enough that it doesn’t matter if you know who the bad guy is, you still want to keep reading just to see how it unravels.

What I liked the most about this book is that Litherland is capable of transporting you with his descriptions to the small town where the story takes place, you can almost feel the wind and smell the sea. What may seem like unnecessary details to some people is what makes it stand out from other similar books to me.

What I didn't like as much as I mentioned before was the amount of narrators that can feel a bit unnecessary at times. Two of the narrators were little boys and the language and expressions they used feels a bit too mature for their age. Also for me there were too many commas in some parts which was a bit distracting sometimes.

I would recommend this book to people who are bored with their usual mystery books and want something more interesting with the added paranormal aspect. On the other hand I wouldn’t recommend this book to people who don’t like to read from different perspectives as this one has more than six narrators.
