Passion Richards is spicier than a New Orleans crawfish etoufee! She is a bold character with confidence and style. The Finesser written by Patrice Brown introduces Passion to the swaggalicious Jody Colton. Having hit rock bottom and down on his luck, Jody can’t believe his good fortune when Ms. Passion steps in to help him out. He sees her as a golden opportunity and plans to take full advantage of this mysterious vixen. Jody is accustomed to using what he has to get what he needs. With the help of Passion, he knows he can do better for himself and his young son.

Jody launches himself into a full blown entanglement with Passion and she reluctantly agrees even though she gets the feeling that something is off about him. Jody uses his good looks and charm to get whatever he wants from whomever he pleases. Money, sex, and drugs are his vices. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to satisfy his cravings. He knows he can finesse the panties off Ms. Passion, but if he plays his cards right he may be able to get more than a roll in the sack.

Passion is no doe-eyed bimbo. She is cunning and deeply spiritual. Her tarot cards are always right and the shadow man will pay a visit to anyone who crosses her. Raising her younger sister and building a tow truck empire has prepared her for any challenges that may come her way. With hoodoo on her side, she is ready for the smooth talking Jody. She knows she’s taking a risk by getting involved with this man, but being bored with her current suitors, she’s looking to switch things up a bit.

The Finesser earns 3 out of 4 stars. This story would grab the attention of women who enjoy a good romance novel. You are in for quite a ride on this roller coaster ride with some very intriguing twists and turns. However, the author attempted to cover a lot of ground in only 194 pages. This made the story feel rushed at times. There are parts that could have been fleshed out more to fill in some of the gaps. The character development was a bit shallow. While the author does provide some backstory for the characters, it would have been nice to get behind the scenes and into the metacognition of the choices made by the characters. I also would have loved more time with the sex scenes, especially with Jody’s unconventional lifestyle. Additionally, Jody’s son Richie seems like an afterthought. His role in the story could have definitely added some depth to Jody’s character if it was fleshed out a little more.

The duality style of writing chosen by the author shows that there are two sides to every story. Gaining perspective from both characters about the same events helps the reader become invested in both main characters. The ending was a little flat and left me with many questions. Maybe there is enough meat left on the bones for a sequel. Overall, The Finesser is an enjoyable, easy read that will keep you engaged from the beginning to the end.
