Review by Samyukta_S -- Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren
Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a supernatural fantasy-cum-thriller, revolving around Crighton, an underworld soul-seeking demon whose life changes after encountering his soulmate, who unfortunately happens to be an angel. Battling his origin as well as pondering over new forbidden feelings of love, Crighton attempts to achieve the impossible and in the process, redeem himself.
The book is mainly divided into two parts, with the first part playing out as a normal thriller, with Benjamin Poe, a firefighter with a troubling son, acting as the prominent character. After an eventful fire incident that raises Poe’s suspicions against his own son, he encounters Crighton and his worst fears are confirmed. He fights as Crighton tries to take away his son’s soul, but in a tragic turn of events, ends up being incriminated for it. The first part had the most well-written and gripping scenes I have ever read. The story flowed incredibly well, and it was page-turning and deliciously terrifying as well.
The focus shifts completely on Crighton towards the second half of the book, after Poe’s suicide, and this is where things started getting muddled and rushed. The plot takes a completely supernatural turn at this point. Crighton and an unknown angel are captured by a secret organization on earth and forced to interact in close quarters. Not much explanation is provided about the reasons behind it. It ends with the two of them discovering they are soulmates, which obviously incurs the wrath of Lucifer, the King of the Underworld. The rest of the book is a blur of activity and newfound realizations which would have been more impactful if they were better spaced-out and not dumped at once. There are too many things happening towards the end, which is usually quite thrilling, but in this case, was a little overwhelming. Some of the circumstances were also quite hastily explained, and new characters were not given a proper introduction. Hopefully, the second book will resolve all these issues.
I rate Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren 3 out of 4 stars, as it had an incredibly strong first half, but a weaker and slightly rushed second half. There were very few editing and grammatical errors.
This book would appeal to people interested in Angels, Demons, Heaven and Hell, forbidden love, or just a good mystery. There is occasional swearing involved and it is explicit. The sex scenes are not too graphic. There are scenes of torture and captivity.
