We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first novel in a sci-fi fantasy series. It follows the story of a young man called Galen Bray who grew up in the dangerous land of Princes but when his uncle who lives in the kingdom of Voulhire dies, he has to go there to claim his inheritance. At the same time, the King of Voulhire has ordered for the powerful evil mage, Lord Melodrath, to be killed as he has done some heinous crimes. However, rumours start to spread throughout the kingdom that he may still be alive. As Galen adjusts to his new life in Voulhire, assimilating into its culture, he discovers he might be able to help Voulhire in its current state of unstableness.
What I liked most about this book is the writing style, it flowed so nicely and was almost poetic. The descriptions were detailed and created vivid images in my mind. The writing really complimented the fantasy sci-fi story being told, as stories of this genre need many descriptions to help the reader understand the kind of world being set up. Overall, I was completely enthralled by Tysz’s diction.
In addition, the descriptions of the action scenes were very entertaining. I especially enjoyed the scenes with Lord Melodrath using his magic. Matthew constantly highlighted the villain's powerfulness through his narration so well. It was interesting to see other characters cower in his presence or get defeated so easily. I understood what made him such a threat to Voulhire.
I also liked how different characters' points of view were explored in the book and how well it was handled. The character backstories and motivations were interesting and very well written so it engaged me as a reader and made it easy for me not to forget about them. Not to mention, each character had a unique personality so each one could be distinguished effortlessly.
Furthermore, the dialogue in the book was amazing. It sounded so natural and very realistic. It was also very informative. There were times when so much information was conveyed without saying much, which had a greater effect on me as a reader.
Overall, I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. It had a very good storyline and it was very nicely developed and set up. There was nothing I disliked about this novel. There were also no grammatical or spelling errors at all. As a result of that, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I feel this book is aimed towards teenagers and onwards as the language may be too profound for younger readers as well as a few themes that were discussed that may be too mature.
