The Commander by Dan E. Hendrickson is a fascinating story about Lt. Commander Jacob Edwards of the United States Coast Guard whose tenacity and desire to win is matched by none. He is considered the best in his field, and he proves it repeatedly. The story focuses on him and his never-ending quest to secure the United States coastline from smugglers and cartels. His subsequent rise and outstanding leadership skills are only comparable to a select few. One invariably describes him as a younger version of “the living legend” Captain Tommy Williams. His friends and family, with whom he is very close, especially his beloved daughter Danielle, back up this claim.

It centers on international terrorists and industrial sabotage, shady organizations. He treats his crew like family, which inspires loyalty no matter how dangerous the situation they find themselves in. Their loyalty is inspiring and a very great example of what a leader should be. The attention to details on military hierarchy and language demonstrates the difference between a soldier and an ordinary citizen. It also teaches about the issues related to destructive relationships and corruption and the subsequent dangers it brings. Characters like Gustaeve and Vice Commandant James Harrington deal with this dilemma throughout the book.

The Commander is a well-crafted piece that is engaging and full of action sequences and subtle undertones of family and friendships. Dan Hendrickson's elaborate description of the military operations is very precise and accurate, for example, the scenes on the ship and how they are portrayed made me feel as if I was one of the enlisted members. The seamless introduction of other characters makes it easier for the reader to follow the story.

The book is engaging from cover to cover and keeps you wanting more. However, some acronyms needed explanations, especially to those not versed in military language. The suspense generated keeps the reader gripped and the book memorable, especially the bad people and their heartless ways. The protagonist's perfect description and execution bring about equally impressive antagonists, which make the read interesting.

There were little to none grammatical errors, indicating the book is professionally edited. Additionally, there also some instances of profanities throughout the book. I recommend this book to those seeking a thrilling and action-packed read that depicts family, friendship, and combat at its best. However, the novel is suitable for adult readers due to its violent scenes. I happily give it a rating of four out of four stars.
