[rwc=id469514-125]2 out of 4 stars.[/rwc]Karinya is a story about a girl living within her indigenous community and the trial and tribulations she faces. Although this story has heart, I would give this book two stars out of four, as I would not recommend this book to others. I believe the rating would increase if the book had gone through several more drafts. I, however, did enjoy the experience of the novel and how it showed the story of Kirra and her hardships. What turned me away from the book was how fast paced and vulgar it was without adding much depth to the overall story. This book is not for children, there are many adult themes running throughout the book which are not suitable for a younger audience.

The book follows Kirra and her boyfriend Banjo, as they move through their day to day lives facing poverty, abuse and violence. The pair try to escape from their lives by winning a stay at a local resort. With a turn of events, the pair are wrongfully accused of and are pursued by the police.

This story is about change and acting when there is a fundamental wrong in the world around you. The topics and dialogue being challenged in this novel makes it a good read for anyone who is interested in indigenous topics but for the most part the way this is written does not pull in the reader or make you care for the main characters. The story does not flow well. There are moments where the plot shifts in favor of the characters with very little explanation.

In my opinion, the story has the potential to be better but is hindered by poor execution and poor editing.
