The book, Superbugs by Tayma Tameem, is set in the dystopian world of the late 21st century. The book starts out in the middle of Covid-90 and other scary viruses. People are required to wear masks, stay inside, and not touch their faces in public. The main character, Lily, is the head of her residential building. Her and her residents come across a pregnant escaped convict (Mabel). If they sent her back out into the world, the government would take her baby and do experiments on it and her with new vaccines. Other characters are introduced, like a vaccination doctor, Mabel’s convict husband, a kidnapped head of an outlaw crew, the tyrannical head of the government, and another woman on the government council. Lily’s residential plant has to battle with a troublesome resident, while trying to protect the 17 year old pregnant Mabel.

The best part about this book was that it had lots of characters that introduced their perspectives. Readers got to hear from a multitude of different perspectives which added another layer to an already complicated plot. The plot was intriguing, especially when Lily and Bill had to stop Faulkner from giving Mabel away, and on Gathering Day when Mabel got to leave the building in disguise. Lily and 11.22 were my favorite characters in the book. Both of these characters always had intriguing thoughts and actions.

One of the only things that this book was missing was romance. There was a bit of romance regarding Mabel and Ben, but that was short lived in the plotline. That would be one of the only things I would add to this book. Another part of the book I didn’t love was when a few more characters were introduced in the middle of the book. I ended up liking them, too, but they came in during a cliffhanger with the main characters, leaving me on edge.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book is sophisticated while using understandable themes and roller coaster plotlines. I noticed no errors in this book, it was extremely well edited. I rated this book with 3 stars and not 4 because I believe a romantic plot line would’ve added something even more to the story. Also because at late points in the book, new characters were added which added a bit of confusion and “catch up.” I didn’t rate this book 2 stars because reading from a few different characters’ points of view was helpful to develop different characters so quickly. Especially when Mabel was having all of her dreams.

This book would be enjoyed by fans of the book Divergent. I would also recommend it to fans of The Hunger Games, and other dystopian books. This book would also appeal to readers who enjoy other adult fiction, especially dystopian books.
