Review by Pinning_RJ -- Shadow Game by A.M. Adair
Shadow Game by A. M. Adair is an espionage spy thriller.
Elle, a CIA agent, is sent back to Iraq to execute an operation along with her team. Her team consists of Tex, the second in command, Jack, the computer genius, and Eve, the analyst. They aim to eliminate the current authority members of Daesh without leaving a trace of any connecting link to them. On this journey where she has to decide between her instincts and trusts, she faces many hurdles and threats alone and along with her team.
The scenes were portrayed in a very elaborate form. The details and descriptions of the action scenes were very thorough. Detailed information on the organizations, people, and other terminologies has been nicely provided. When it comes to the name of organizations, many short forms have been used which caused a hindrance as remembering info related to them wasn't easy all the time. If we look at the summary, the book majorly contains scheming and planning.
Elle, our main protagonist, was given a new mission, i.e., to eradicate the higher-ups of Daesh. I liked how cooperatively and effectively her team worked together. All the plans formed by Elle and her team were noteworthy & complied with the reader's mind. This book was the first of its kind that I had ever read. The cover of the book was the first thing I noticed and selected it for reading as it spiked my interest. But I found it quite unrelated to the plot. The book felt monotonous at certain points, and it was easy to guess the outcomes of many scenes. In my opinion, it didn't contain much thrilling or on the edge of the seat instances for me.
There was this incident in the book that I disliked where Elle had an emotional breakdown which was confusing as everything was going fine for Elle. The detailed information in this book is from her perspective and this seems like either she's a very talkative person or a detailed oriented one. But in the reality of the book, she's a straight-forward and serious person. Out of nowhere, for no reason, she has an emotional breakdown, and she says she doesn't know what's happening. I wasn't able to completely comprehend her behavior at this stage and felt it wasn't well crafted for the character's development.
I would recommend this book to all those people who are interested in espionage, thrillers, and spy genres. Although fiction, this book did have a down to earth approach. This book is also suitable for those who are new to this genre and interested in spy thrillers.
I would rate it '3 out of 4'. This book was well edited. Only minute errors were present. The book contains sexually explicit scenes that are present in brief. Details of gruesome murders are also brief but still might make few people uncomfortable. Due to its high conductivity of brief violent content and slightly religion-oriented content, this book is only suitable for adults and for those who are comfortable with all this.
