Review by Jade_MonPark -- Rescued by E. Alan Fleischauer
Rescued is the first novel in the JT Thomas Saga written by E. Alan Fleischauer and introduces us to the Old West with a colourful array of characters and vast landscapes.
JT’s story begins when he is forced to take shelter from a storm in a forgotten cave, but the cave holds much more than the body of a dead miner and a hand-written note.
Once the deluge subsided, JT strode out of the cave and his life changed forever, for there in the distance of the Western plains, a lone wagon rolled along slowly, dragging three women along behind it. After seeing one of the women being shot, JT is convinced the women are hostages, and he springs into action.
After saving the women and introductions are made, JT learns the names of the captives – Jean, Annabelle, Dawn, and Erica. Dawn had been wounded and requires medical attention and the group makes for the small town of Point Stevens Pass located in the high plains of Colorado.
Unbeknownst to JT, Jean Cantrell is a ruthless outlaw and bank robber who will stop at nothing, including killing anyone who gets in her way, to satiate her greed for money. Soon after arriving in Point Stevens Pass, she double-crosses JT and leaves a trail of destruction in her wake.
JT and Annabelle find out where Jean is headed, and they set off in pursuit. In their hunt for Jean, they find themselves back at the mysterious cave which is hiding secrets of its own, and JT and Annabelle must uncover what those secrets are.
JT feels himself being drawn to Annabelle, who is as fiery as she is beautiful, and on the Western plains, a romance as old as time itself begins.
This was the first time I have read a Western novel and I am not entirely sure if the author convinced me to return to the genre, and for that reason, I have rated Rescued two out of four stars.
I liked how the plot was fast-paced and action-packed with a hint of mystery. I also enjoyed the ending, where things do not always work out exactly how you expected them to.
I did not like how short the length of the novel was and I feel like the book could have been much better if the author had given us better character descriptions. When the author is describing JT, all we really know about what he looks like is his height, and apart from Annabelle, we do not know what Erica or Dawn looks like.
I would suggest Rescued to readers who enjoy a quick weekend book, served with a dash of Western cowboy and a sprinkle of good old-fashioned romance. I would not recommend this book to young children as there are scenes that contain violence, and some profanity.
