Review by Bridgetbruso99 -- One Way or Another
Calder Benedict is privileged, successful, has a hot new boyfriend, and sisters that love her, but once you peel away the surface of her charmed life not all is what it seems. Her mom's new boyfriend is less than savory, her boyfriend's ex-lover is out for revenge, and her estranged father is back in town. When you have everything, you have everything to loose. Find out what happens between the galas and the glamour in One Way or Another the first in a series of new books by Mary J Williams.
The Benedict sisters always have had a special bond. Since they were young, Calder,Bryce,Andi, and Destry would hold meetings in their special room of their family home to discuss anything and everything. This story begins with them holding such a meeting. The topic of discussion is the events of the the night before at a club party, particularly Adam Stone who rescued Calder from the unwanted advances of Milo Prendergast and their mother,Billie Benedict's sleazy new boyfriend, Ingo Hunter.
Calder Benedict leads a complicated life. Her successful organization Erica's Angels has a Spring Romance Gala coming up. Calder and her sisters have agreed to find out what Ingo Hunter is up to. Is he after the family's money? And why is her father in town? Between all this she manages to make time for her new boyfriend Adam Stone and keep his jealous ex-lover,Aurora, in check.
Written like a soap opera set in New York City, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This complicated cast of characters are well developed and interesting. It takes a while to figure out how connected each character is to the story and keeps you on your toes until the very last page. My favorite parts of the book is the meetings the sisters hold in their special room to discuss the goings on in their lives, a tradition they've held on to since childhood.
Even though I loved the storyline, the book did have some flaws. Not knowing the exact theme, the book takes some time to develop a rythm. The cover of the book doesn't match the story within it's pages, looking more like a country and western romance instead of a story of a New York City high society romance. There were very little grammatical errors, however there is a great deal of adult language and content.
I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars. The story was well written but there were times I lost interest with only a clue that peaked my interest enough to keep me reading on for more. This book is the first in a series and think I will enjoy the stories to follow narrated by the other Benedict sisters that will suit my personality better.
I think that anyone who enjoys soap operas, romance, and mystery will enjoy this complex novel. It would be a good recommendation for people who enjoy stories about wealthy heiresses and the problems that come with them.
