The Last Assassination is a political thriller by James E Doucette. This is a well written and well-edited novel. Although it contains violence, the gory details are left to the reader's imagination. If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers that will keep you guessing, then you should read this book. It has an international flair that spans the globe. The suspense is intense, and the characters are developed in a clear, straightforward manner. With relatively few pages, it is a fast and thrilling read. It is also refreshing to read a book that does not contain profanity and erotic subplots. The novel is an intelligent, exciting thriller that weaves a web of intrigue and suspense. Nevertheless, due to the violent storyline, it is better suited for mature readers.

Philip lives a double life; he repairs antique furniture and is an assassin for hire. Realizing it is time to retire, the Dagger accepts one last job. When the job goes sideways, Philip joins forces with his old friend, Mark, in order to make it right. Together with the help of some talented individuals, Mark and Philip do what it takes to get answers.

A drone is hijacked and attacks a hospital in Aleppo, a suicide bomber detonates a device in a Paris bookstore, and Iran’s minister of nuclear safety and security is murdered by a car bomb in Vienna. How these events are connected, and who benefits from such heinous crimes?

I enjoyed this book because it moves rapidly, and still was able to introduce sophisticated subplots. There are many moving parts and several interesting characters in the book. The world is a chessboard, and it is not clear who is the mastermind and who is the pawn. I enjoyed this book because it kept me guessing until the end.

What I did not like about the book was one event where a puppy was injured. I know it was only to demonstrate that the general was pure evil, but I did not like it. Strange, how I was affected more by an attack on a puppy, then a suicide bomber. On second thought, perhaps I should not admit that.

This thriller contains twists and turns, and yet it makes sense and remains cohesive. It is a complex story that takes the reader all over the world. I loved that I was surprised at the end. There are subtle clues to the evil mastermind. Nevertheless, once I knew the answer, I felt as if I should have known all along. Ultimately, the author leaves us to contemplate this maxim: “We have met the enemy and he is us”. Consequently, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
