Review by Pandaexpress64 -- We are Voulhire: A New Arriv...
[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy adventure that takes on many characters and individual journeys. Each chapter is based on a different character's perspective and story. The country of Voulhire is ruled by King Wilhelm who has more enemies than friends that are both near and far in location. He entrusts Lord Eldus to the land of Hillport which had two previous rulers that were monstrous and corrupt by nature. Another character introduced in the plot is a newcomer to the country of Voulhire, Galen, who recently was given passage from the Lands of the Princes, a land of poverty, because his uncle searched for a very long time to find him and bring him here. All of the diverse characters and their own individual stories come together and align with the major plot as a whole.
I found that the author has a great way of providing imagery with his words to the point where I could visualize each setting that he would describe. When Galen finally made it to Voulhire and witnessed the land before him, the description of how he reacted made you feel as though you were the one to experience this new land. His descriptive words could even convey emotions when reflecting on a character's thoughts or actions. This was riveting to read and allowed for my attention to remain intact throughout each chapter. Something that was also intriguing was how even though the end of each chapter brought a new story to read about it was still organized and understandable. I was able to interpret each section of the book and combine all of the knowledge that they brought in order to figure out what the main theme of the story was. This was crucial for me because if I were to get lost within the story it would be hard for me to pick back up.
I have yet to find a single negative thing that I could comment on about this book. The book was very well written and kept my attention consistently. Each chapter had a thrilling scene that made a connection to something that was previously stated which made the book even more interesting. The incorporation of the subplots and character development that grew exponentially gave the story ten times more detail and understanding of this new world. I honestly, truthfully enjoyed this book and want to read the entire series.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because clearly this book was written by a highly experienced writer and exceptionally well edited. His words conveyed true passion for not only writing but for the actual plot of the story. This is shown by the way everything is expressed in extreme detail and organization in a way that reveals key parts of the story at exactly the right moments. This is a type of book that is hard to put down when started and creates a desire to know more once finished.
In terms of a recommended audience for this book, I would recommend a mature audience for a few good reasons. First of all, there are more than a few profanities that are prominent within the text that add to the charm of the book. Secondly, there are some references to pedophilia and sexual content that are a part of the subplot that refers to one of the corrupt lords in Hillport that I mentioned previously. In addition, those who enjoy fantasy and adventure genres would thoroughly enjoy this book. The physical world and the world of Caromentis, world of magic, are both explained in this book. So, anyone who revels in magic concepts and divination would also appreciate the works of this book.
