Review by enna_idEsrun -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival...
[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: New Arrival Under Great Skies is the earliest innovation in the Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire empire. In this first installment, Tysz transports us into realms of mystique and magic. The theory that magic crosses into our physical universe when Caromentis the magical universe and the Cosmos our physical universe collide is a notion which Tysz introduces in this intriguingly fantastic book.
The volume opens on a night ambush on a castle town called Hillport. A dark and evil force referred to only as the Magistrate appears on the scene. The loud eruption which heralds his arrival is followed by the piercing cries of the watchmen of the castle. Soon a rumbling tremor is felt inside the castle as shockwaves creep across the floor of the foyer and up the castle walls. The explosion that comes next rends the doors right off their hinges. Now, up the castle steps ascends the Magistrate. And with his plan to depose the current Lord of Hillport set in motion, who in all of Voulhire can stop him?
As the title suggests, the central themes of this book revolve around expectation and imminence. Accordingly, two new arrivals to Voulhire appear to be key figures to the plot in the series. The bright, young, wide-eyed and bushy-tailed Galen arrives in Voulhire from the impoverished Lands of the Princes to inherit his late uncle's fortune and his iron-smith business. And Beth the curious 'being' who seems to have fled Caromentis, arrives in Voulhire by some rather unusual circumstances. To them both, Voulhire is a haven and a retreat.
This book was a thrill to read. The author's style of writing was comprehensive and fun. Dialogues were logical, interesting and often humorous. Tysz's full descriptions of scenes and events were impressive and at times disturbing as some of the scenes were very graphic. The language while simple was captivating to the adult reader. I was intrigued by the sheer ingenuity of the book. The conceptual vastness Tysz achieved by providing access to research material was notable. And the additional resource material was useful as it authenticated the author's ideas and concepts.
I loved this author's inventiveness; this is a very innovative and creative work and I look forward to reading the subsequent episodes. What I least enjoyed about this book was the wordiness of some of the narratives. I found myself having to read and reread a few narratives in order to grasp the particular message being communicated. I came across a few expletives, but there was no sexual content in the book.
New Arrival Under Great Skies appears to have been professionally edited since I did not encounter any errors. Persons who embrace books with a magical and mystical emphasis will enjoy this book. Yet owing to the profanity and strong graphic content, this book may not be suitable for young readers. To this end, I rate this book a four out of four stars.
