[Following is a volunteer review of "The Prodigy Slave, Book One: Journey to Winter Garden" by Londyn Skye.]
The Prodigy Slave, Book One: Journey to Winter Garden is an enthralling book about Lily’s slavery and her journey to achieving fame with her exceptional music skills.
The book takes us through Lily’s life and keeps us hooked with her positivity despite difficult times. Her strength and ability to accept her life without complaining, is awe inspiring. Her character transformation and the way she touches the life of people around her with such kindness and empathy makes us love her. Her unique bond with James and the way they understand each other, is amazing. From the viewpoint of James, we are able to see his perspective as well and feel bittersweet emotions for his character. Still he is the hero that Lily needs since he will go to great lengths for his love. But will our hero be able to go against his father and Lily’s owner to free her? Will he be able to support Lily, a slave and go against his family and society? Will Lily ever achieve freedom from Slavery?
Author London Skye has an enigmatic way of writing which sucks you into the story. She is able to portray her characters and emotions in such depth that it might make you emotional and you would still want to keep reading to know more. Her writing style is attractive and she depicts the story from different perspective of her characters. The author is able to develop all of her characters gradually and connect you in their journey. The story teaches us to have tolerance, patience and kindness in spite of bad circumstances.
I really loved how astounding the main character is and how she does not let anything deter her actions. Sure, we are able to see her insecurities and doubts but she is resilient and is able to achieve success in what she aspires. I love the other characters of the book as well such as James, who always supports Lily even if she isn’t aware of it; William, who treats her like his daughter as well as Landon, who grew out of his selfish ways and paves a way to success for Lily. There are other good characters as well.
There’s not much to not like about the story. One thing that I disliked a bit though is that Lily doesn’t do much on her own. She follows the path made for her by others. She isn’t seen taking a strong stand for any injustice served to her. Also, sometimes the language spoken in the book could be slightly difficult to understand.
I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 because it is quite good and I strongly loved the writing style and the story. Its addictive and beautiful. It is quite well-edited as well. The book is a great read for anyone of any age who likes reading historical fiction.
