Review by Bhavyaekam -- How To Be Successful
How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader by M. Curtis McCoy is a compilation of conversations with a few successful personalities, and some advice that will help you in your journey to success. The book is meant for drawing inspiration from the success stories and getting charged with the motivational pieces the author wants to endorse.
The book contains interviews of eight eminent entrepreneurs, including the one with the author himself, who are highly successful in their niche. In those interviews, they share their experiences, thoughts, and insights to give the reader a peek into their lives and personalities. The motto is to learn how to be successful in creating a life that’s not only affluent but also harmonious and satisfying.
Some of the main ideas the book preaches are: Discover problems and create solutions, take a calculated risk for a lifetime of success, surround yourself with positive people, focus on your blessings, live life to the fullest enjoying every day, and be a good person. It urges not to be a negative person whose view, like a horse with blinders, is restricted to only one direction. The book tells the reader to pursue the goals relentlessly and not to take 'no' for an answer.
Many of the answers featured in the interviews are inspiring like: "Success is about doing something that improves the lives of others and makes you truly happy", "work like it’s up to you and pray like it’s up to God”, and "God made you awesome, and there are things that no one else can do as good as you can!"
The best thing or the idea I found in the book is the reward for reading books. The author's mother, whose interview is also featured in the book, used to keep rewards in the books she got her kids to read. That's a very novel idea, and I would like to practice the same with my kids too. Also, the most sought after but rare traits, as per the interviewees, are honesty, loyalty, and commitment. These qualities are very rare to find in the present-day scenario. The book will encourage the reader to uphold and value those uncommon characteristics. And quoting one of his experiences, the author says that even when saying “no” one can motivate and inspire others. In my belief too, everyone should master the craft of saying negative opinions without hurting the ego of the receiver.
Even though the book is meant for inspiration some of the long answers, that too in the first person, seem to be a bit arrogant. Reading through the interviews with so many "I-s" made me feel drowsy. The book is loaded up with motivational statements and real-life experiences, but it fails to hold the reader's interest after some point. Also, one of the interviewees tells you to go to bed with a problem in mind that you will have a solution when you wake up. Sleeping with a mind full of problems is not a good idea. Even though he is saying that doing so will yield solutions, sleeping with a clear psyche is always my priority.
The book throws significant insight into how to be successful, and how to deal with success. As the book is filled with loads of inspirational quotes, statements, and real-life stories, it may attract those who like motivational, self-help books. But, it couldn't hold my interest for long. Hence, the book can be rated a 2 out of 4 stars, for the inspirational jargon it is pouring out to help the readers succeed in life.
