Review by Aqua Reader -- How To Be Successful
How To Be Successful is a motivational read guiding people on how to do well in business. The author M. Curtis McCoy tells us of the hardships he's had throughout his life and how he overcame these. He was diagnosed with brain cancer, but never gave up on trying to make something of himself. He is now a successful entrepreneur and uses his experiences to try and motivate those that would like to be successful in their lives.
He interviews several people who are successful including himself. He asks what their view of success is and how they managed to get there. They all tell their stories on the difficulties they’ve had to endure, finding success and living the life they’ve dreamed of. The subtitle of this book is Think like a Leader and it gives good insight on how leaders treat those that are lower on the hierarchy than they are. It also inspires one to help those that you can on your path to success.
I like some of the inspirational lines in the book. These are some phrases people should live by. One by McCoy is “Success is about doing something that improves the lives of others and makes you truly happy.”
I also liked something Jeff Wobig said when he was asked his definition of success - “As long as you can always persevere, as long as you continue to find some way to become more, that’s it.”
There are nuggets of motivational messages throughout the book. Some are things you may know but need reminding about. Either way, the author gives the reader useful inspiration. I think that McCoy has done a good job of making himself relatable to the reader by sharing bits of his personal life. It reminded me that life doesn’t always go the way you’d like it to go, but one must adapt and move forward.
What was a bit strange to me was that all the people interviewed were strong believers in God. Christians to be specific. That made it seem like this book is only meant for Christian readers even though I’m sure that’s not what the author was going for. Faith in a higher power is not a negative, but a little more diversity in the people interviewed would have appealed to a wider audience.
This book has been well edited and I give the book three out of four stars. Anyone with a strong faith in Christianity will love this book. If you are agnostic or an atheist, you may feel like this book is not for you, but I recommend you try out the book as you will find some inspirational messages.
