The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is an expertly written crime novel that will leave you trying to solve the mystery until the very end. It follows the police team of Inspector Sheehan as they investigate a series of murders, trying to piece together the identity of the murderer, the connection between the victims, and most importantly, the next target. The murderer, a blogger on the dark web using the name Nemein, posts blog updates after every murder about the righteous justice of his killings. Inspector Sheehan and his team must try to decipher clues from the blog posts, rule out a long list of potential suspects, and solve the mystery before it’s too late.

This novel was one of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time. Each chapter presented captivating new twists and turns, keeping me on the edge of my seat. I kept thinking that I had solved the mystery, only to be presented with a new clue in the next chapter that disproved my theory. The author stayed one step ahead of the reader, peppering the novel with a mix of genuine clues and dead-end clues, and spacing out each reveal with the perfect pace to keep the reader invested.

In a novel with as many characters as this one, I often find that authors can struggle to maintain a unique personality for each character. Much to my delight, that was certainly not the case in this novel. The detectives on Inspector Sheehan’s team were all well-characterized and realistic, resulting in a dynamic group that was fun to read about. The extensive cast of suspects were unique and diverse as well. The dialogue throughout the novel was clever, realistic, and true to the characters’ personalities. The addition of the blog posts added an even deeper layer to the characterization, letting the reader get into the mind of the proud killer, even without knowing their identity.

This novel is the 4th in the Inspector Sheehan Mysteries series. I read The Dark Web Murders without reading the previous books in the series, but I found that this did not hinder my understanding or enjoyment of the novel. That being said, because I enjoyed reading this novel so much, I have every intention of going back and reading through the rest of the series to gain more insight and background on the detective team and their adventures.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Between the captivating writing style, the engrossing mystery, and the amazingly diverse cast of characters, I found nothing to dislike about this novel. I would recommend this novel to those who are a fan of mystery and crime novels. The murders can be a bit graphic, and some horrifyingly unethical sexual acts are described, so I would not recommend it to younger readers.
