Robert.E. Smith in Selling change tackles one of the most difficult challenges facing leaders today; generating commitment and buying-in to organizational change. Selling change shows how leaders can prepare for transition through operational shift by generating highly engaged commitment to change. The author outlines approaches leaders must embrace to overcome emotional, behavioral and mental resistance to change.
This book is quite impressive, timely and relevant. It is very easy to understand since Smith introduces a simple, powerful and scientifically proven way of increasing the ability to deliver transformational change. The three approaches are impact, influence and consistency which help eliminate frustrating change complex and only focusing on those components that add real value, build transparency and accountability in every change initiative. The author points out the leader’s weaknesses and challenges them to communicate the need for organizational change using these three approaches, impact, influence and consistency.
Selling change had a central message majorly to the leaders, stakeholders and employees of an organization which the author drove home effectively communicating it exhaustively using simple words that the reader could easily understand. The book admits the shortcomings of prior models in today’s ever changing business environment. Smith takes us on a journey through real-life change in organizations mixing theories with practical examples. This it does by finding the best of the past and builds on it while providing available practical new approaches through research and practice.
I applaud the authors writing skills. Some business books only outline the failures of many businesses without telling the concerned parties how to avoid the failures. The same way some address ways of succeeding in business failing to mention the probable failures on the way and how to deal with failures and also the past challenges that affected the business and could either reoccur or be transformed to something beneficial for the business. Smith addresses all this fact in a recommendable way that could be of help to even non business owners. Most importantly there were a lot of lessons to learn from the book.
I found no error in the book. The book was professionally written and edited. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to organizational leaders especially the ones running business that are growing and experiencing a lot of challenges transforming and make change a reality in their businesses. Smith is an incredible author; I look forward to reading more of his books.
