The book We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz, is the second installment in the Voulhire series. Picking up from where he left off in the first installment of this series, the author takes us through another journey in the life of the main character, Galen Bray, who seems to have taken to his new life pretty well.

Just when Galen was beginning to find his feet in the forge business his great-uncle left him, the Mayor comes knocking to break the news that the supply of iron to Magnum Caelum was threatened due to the destruction of their source city, Hilport, and their only hope was the ailing Lord of Virko. The responsibility to save Magnum Caelum rested on the shoulders of Galen and his companions: Demetrius, the monk, and Rowan, Galen’s tutor. With nothing but sheer hope and the Virko citizenship of Demetrius, the trio approached the dying Lord of Virko, who was glad to help but also had a request of his own; which is to help cleanse his house of the demons that have negatively influenced his son. However, the aftermath of the cleansing only wreaked more havoc on the city of Virko as a whole.

One thing I noticed about this book is the inclusion of a map to help guide the reader on the locations of the places mentioned in it, which I thought was incredible. This map contributed positively to my reading experience because I could see the distances of all the cities from each other rather than just reading about them. In addition to this, I enjoyed how the author switched between the first-person narrative and the third-person narrative. One would have expected this to be distracting, rather it made the book even more intriguing.

On the other hand, I do not like the fact that this book cannot be read as a stand-alone, one has to read the first book to be able to make sense of the second book. Other than that, I had a great time reading this book, which is why I would be rating this book four out of four stars.

I believe this book should appeal to readers who love fantasy novels and do not mind it in series. However, I would not recommend this book to under-aged readers as it contains some gory details that could scare them.

I want to believe that this book was professionally edited as I hardly noticed any errors while reading which contributed greatly to my smooth reading experience.
