Rachel and Ruth have so much in common—they’re both from Minnesota, both of their husbands worked in the Iron Range mines, and both retired early to the Oregon coast after their husbands’ strokes. They’re also willing to break some laws to get a picture-perfect ocean view. Law-abiding Nick, Rachel’s husband, would insist she stop, but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. When Nick’s health takes a turn for the worst, Rachel will have to move to a cheaper place away from her new friend. Neither woman finds this acceptable. They must decide to what lengths are they willing to go to and what laws are they willing to break to keep their lives the way they want them.

Vivian is a single mom struggling to make ends meet. Child support payments from her ex are set to end as soon as her son graduates high school, so she sets out to find a man that meets her requirements: a decent paying job or rich. She struggles to find someone that can provide for her, going to drastic lengths to attract attention. Who knew finding a man would be so difficult?

A Few Trivial Felonies by Sandra Sperling is a humorous novel that focuses on the lives of three women and the criminal activities they participate in. The interesting title is what initially drew me to read this book, and I am glad that I did. The characters were well-written and three-dimensional in a way that I feel so many others fall short. I almost forgot it was a work of fiction and not actual events. Despite the characters’ despicable actions, you almost want them to succeed in their endeavors and not get caught. What I disliked most was the switching perspectives between the three main characters. This is mainly due to confusing Rachel and Ruth with one another when I initially began reading. The switching between multiple characters would not have kept me from reading had I known about it beforehand.

This book is catered towards a more mature audience. Although there are not any explicit sexual scenes, there is quite a bit of both suggestive and profane language peppered throughout, especially during Vivian’s perspective. As the main characters are all women, female readers may relate to and enjoy this book more than male readers.

I would rate A Few Trivial Felonies as 4 out of 4 stars. It was too well-written, well-edited, and difficult to put down that I could not give a lower rating. Overall, it’s not so action-packed as to be unrealistic, but it’s not so slow that it drags along. I would absolutely recommend this book to other readers.
