[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
This book, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first part of a series. The author, Matthew Tysz, likes to call them episodes. It combines spirituality, magic and insights into human nature.
People are fleeing the Lands of Princes, which are islands that are part of Voulhire, because of war and poverty. They're fleeing to Soulhire, the capital of Voulhire, that is promised to be peaceful and have opportunities.
It is indeed a land of opportunities, but not as peaceful as believed...
This book is written from an omniscient point of view which zeroes in on a few key characters.
I thought the scene with the parade where everyone put aside religious and political beliefs and held hands was lovely. It was so easy to visualize and powerful.
Another scene that stood out was Galen, one of the people fleeing the Lands of Princes, learning about plumbing, since it didn't exist in the Lands of the Princes.
There was another scene that reminded me of a scene in Harry Potter where Voldemort was writing to Harry in the diary and Harry was writing back.
I liked the fast pace. I also really appreciated that with such a rich, complex story that they didn't just info dump at the beginning. They really did a great job of weaving in what we need to know throughout the story.
In fact a lot of We are Voulhire has the overall feeling of Harry Potter. The magic, a certain mage that's the antagonist… of course, there's a lot of differences too, like the spiritual aspect and different realm, Caromentis, which in this book, is the spiritual world.
I did not like the references to pedophilia, but realize that the author was being realistic about what would happen in certain situations and it may be important to a storyline or overall story later on.
And to be fair there wasn't a lot of detail involved, but since this is the first book or episode, that might change. I only mention this because this type of subject matter is triggering to some individuals.
This might be obvious, since it's not a children's book, but I would recommend this to older teens, young adults and above because of the subject matter. And, like I mentioned above, anyone that enjoys Harry Potter and also exploring spirituality.
It's very interesting and well edited! I can honestly say I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
