We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in a new fantasy series about a kingdom called Voulhire and the magic world of Caromentis. Set in a multiverse that includes everything from kings and lords to mages and dancing warriors, there’s never a dull moment in Voulhire!
In this first book we come to learn about Voulhire and some of its different cities. From fishermen to artisans and many other trades or services, each city contributes to the livelihood of the kingdom. This is what makes Voulhire a thriving and prosperous country. A place where you can build upon a dream. Enter the lovable character Galen Bray, whose life has been hard growing up in the war torn Lands of the Princes. Receiving news that he’s acquired the steel forge and home of his late great uncle, he anticipates a new life in Voulhire. Coming from a repressed country that lends to him being very naive, Galen learns firsthand about the many differing walks of life he encounters, some of which have comical results. Arriving in his great uncle’s hometown of Magnum Caelum, Galen meets the executor of his great uncle’s estate. As polite and naive as Galen is, Rowan is cocky and sarcastic. Although he finishes his executor duties, Rowan insists on staying to help Galen get the forge up and running. As Galen learns about the forge, he and his companion Rowan travel to the mining town of Alcovia. Looking to purchase a rod of white metal to forge with, they secretly buy what may be some extremely rare mineral from the magic world of Caromentis. Not knowing what all this mineral entails they set upon searching for answers.
Nearby in the coastal town of Hillport a new lord has been appointed by the king. Judge Alderman strives to make Hillport a flourishing productive town, to make its stamp on the map of Voulhire. There are some though, for their own devious reasons, who do not want this to come to pass. Along with other town secrets, something terrible happened to the children of Hillport by the previous Lord Orlin. As the new lord, Judge Alderman tries to help the children and unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding their ordeal. With strange and unsettling happenings becoming the norm, he’s starting to question his own sanity.
Elsewhere in Voulhire increasing unrest and evil are brewing in equal spades.
The Riva Rohavi is a fanatical sadistic army bent on revenge to ruin the kingdom. Lord Chancellor Midius Maido is a devious and cruel leader of a powerful council. He’s vying for political control of Voulhire from King Wilhelm Arcolo. Lord Meldorath was once a friend to the king and now feels betrayed by him. His dark and evil presence looms over all and threatens to destroy anything and anyone in his way. Everything the wonderfully diverse kingdom of Voulhire and it’s people stand for now hangs in the balance between good and evil.
I really enjoyed reading this book! There are so many great characters we’re introduced to in this first installment. All the main characters are deliciously complex and intriguing. The storyline is entertaining and you’re impatiently curious as to what’s going to happen next. I like how Galen and Rowan are complete opposites. They somehow complement each other and it works, making their relationship one of the highlights of the book. With that being said, you’re bound to fall in love with the refreshingly honest and innocent Galen. You find yourself rooting for Lord Alderman in his quest to help a community. You’ll cringe at the boldness of the vile and evil dancing army of the Riva Rohavi. There are so many different things happening simultaneously in this book and I love that. The author manages to keep everything organized which made it a pleasure to read. It truly left me wanting more from where this came from. Luckily, I can look forward to reading the next book in the series to see how things play out. I’m excited to see what Matthew Tysz has up his sleeve next!
The only slight drawback that I found with the book was that it was a little slow going in the beginning. Once it hit its stride though, it more than made up for it. I had a hard time putting it down! Other than that, I have nothing negative to say about the book. It was well written and appeared to be professionally edited. Therefore I’m rating it 4 out of 4 stars.
If you like to read fantasies that have that old world flavor, with kings and castles, this book is right up your alley. The magic element is the icing on the cake. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys fantasies and magical realms. You won’t be disappointed!
