Life couldn't get any more intense for Clint Kennedy, a filthy rich, philanthropic banker cum money launderer. In less than twenty-four hours, news of two accidents - a stroke attack and a motor vehicle crash - reach Clint's busy phone, demanding his immediate attention in Miami. Still trying to comprehend the demanding situation in Miami, disturbing news of 'housecleanings' and unexplained assassinations kingpins in his home base, Mexico, make the headlines of American daily papers. And that's about the only information he's getting from home (which he knows better than to believe). How will he deal with the Miami situation? What is happening in Mexico? Will the money faucet stop flowing?
Joe Calderwood whipped up one immensely good story in Money Faucet. The book had all the elements that keep a reader going; a unique and intriguing storyline, interesting and witty characters, and a well-laid plot. The story was narrated mostly from the first-person perspective of the protagonist, Clint, with a third-person point of view into other characters' life at intervals. Only little of Clint's life before the eleven-day span of this episode is revealed; such as his adventurous and varied romantic relationships and his cartel connections. The diction was informal but quite sophisticated. The central theme of the book was crime.
I experienced a couple of hitches while reading. Firstly, the complex plot style of this book initially confused me. The plot unfolded from several perspectives and was not straightforward; it meandered from the present to the past and danced around the past. While I liked the intrigue this pattern created, I easily lost track of events and had to go back a couple of times before I could get in sync with the plot. The second hitch was long sentences. There were too many long sentences in the narration, and as is the case with long sentences, they were often incomprehensible.
With a little over two hundred pages, Money Faucet was not a lengthy read, and it was absolutely interesting (laced with suspense and humor). More so, it was realistic; the storyline and characters were believable and easy to relate to. Being inside Clint's head, and viewing life from the perspective of a good criminal, as Clint calls himself, was a new and interesting experience. I liked the money element of this book, and I liked the rush I felt throughout this read. I noticed only two minor errors, so I believe this book was professionally edited. Besides the couple of difficulties mentioned above, I liked everything about this book, and I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
Lovers of crime thrillers and suspense will certainly enjoy this. I think anybody who likes fiction would enjoy this read. Money Faucet is the second book in The Clint Kennedy Crime Series, but it is a standalone read. I look forward to other installments in this series.
