We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in We are Voulhire series. It continues from where the first book ended. There are new characters and places introduced in this novel. This novel focuses on the most productive city in Voulhire called Virko. Virko is only a few decades old, and Lord Venden Hrelek was the discoverer of the city. He built it from bare plain lands to a successful city.

Matthew Tysz introduces us to Folcro the son of a dying Lord Hrelek of Virko, who is well versed in knowledge of science and magic. He is quiet and keeps to himself, but he has something sinister going on in his own space that his dying father is worried about him. His last dying wish was for Folcro to be delivered from the evil. The author also presents the young, playful and mischievous Lord Kayden Morgan, who has a very odd relationship with his servant Peter. He is rich, successful, and has a pregnant wife, but he is not happy. His past still haunts him. Galen, Rowan and the monk’s storyline continue from the first novel. They travel to Virko looking for iron for Galen’s business. In Virko they got more of what they had bargained for, which was to grant the Lord’s last dying wish.

I love how the novel flows from the first book to this one. There are many characters in this series, but the author’s book structure makes it easy to catch up. Each chapter has a heading which clearly states the character/s we are focusing on. I also love the character development and the fast pace of the book. The climax is great, and it kept me wondering what I will expect in the following books. The imagery of the magical action was captivating. The author has a very good imagination. I love how Folco’s storyline would change from the past to the present. It gives the reader full insight on his persona, what he went through to become the person he is in the present. My favorite character is Galen. He is sympathetic and a good friend.

The book is only 158 pages long; it is short and precise. Finished the book in one sitting, couldn’t put the book down. The book is in first person narration for Galen’s story and the rest is written in third person narration. It feels like we are in Galen’s story of what transpired when he moved to Voulhire. There are no syntactics or spelling mistakes, the book was professionally edited. The English is simple, and it is easy to comprehend.

I have nothing negative to say about the book, so I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys reading magical fantasy books with a bit of action. If you do not appreciate or you are sensitive to any LGBTQ storylines, I suggest you don’t read this book. I am definitely reading the next book in We are Voulhire series.

I have not read any books in this series, but I love reading the reviews. I hadn’t seen much about Folco’s character except for his relationship to Lord Venden. It would be interesting to know more about his past. Thank you for a great review! I hope you continue to enjoy the series :balloon:
