The indispensable work done by animal shelters across the world is profoundly underrated. Children are often not aware that there are many animals in need of a loving home. What better way to educate and encourage adoption than through a beautifully illustrated children’s book starring a (maybe too) well-adjusted adopted fur-child?

Cooper is a gigantic shelter dog adopted into a loving home a little over a year ago. At first, he was ill-disciplined and unruly, but with training and love, he soon became one of the family – literally. Treated as “his parents’ sixth child”, Cooper doesn’t see himself as a dog. He thinks he is human and is greatly offended should you tell him otherwise.

Please Don’t Tell Cooper He’s a Dog, written by Michelle Lander Feinberg and illustrated by Anna Mosca, is an adorably heart-warming children’s book. It is specifically designed to inspire families with young children to consider adopting a pet from a rescue shelter as opposed to buying from a pet shop.

Each page features beautiful illustrations of Cooper and his family and one or two pairs of rhyming lines. The simple AA-BB rhyme scheme has an almost song-like feeling, while the pictures are reminiscent of childhood days spent painting with watercolours. Both of these aspects are ideal for capturing the attention and imagination of young children.

Throughout the book, it is clear that the author has taken a great deal of care with her choice of rhyming words and her rhyme scheme as a whole. I was thus understandably disappointed to find one forced rhyme. Although it was only one, this spoilt the book a little for me, so I would say this was my least favourite part.

Aside from the stunning illustrations, the adorable storyline, and how well they complimented each other, my favourite feature of the book was Cooper’s larger-than-life personality. He was perfectly portrayed in the poetry, while the flawless illustrations made it so easy to picture all his antics.

I believe that this book was professionally edited, as I found only one small error. I would recommend it to families with children between the ages of 3 and 10 who already have pets, as well as those who are looking to adopt a new pet and want to teach their children the importance of rescue shelters.

I whole-heartedly enjoyed reading this book, and I am pleased to award Please Don’t Tell Cooper He’s a Dog, written by Michelle Lander Feinberg, a well-deserved rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
