[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the series about Galen, from the Lands of the Princes. A man who came from a poor land and upbringing, and who had just found out that his dying great uncle, a blacksmith, had left him his entire inheritance in the great city of Voulhire, a place called Magnum Caelum. Galen has to travel by sea for more than a week to reach Magnum Caelum. Upon his arrival, he discovers how different Voulhire was from the Lands of the Princes. Like how a worker from his land was treated like a king, yet in Voulhire they were mistreated.
On the other hand, a city by the name Hillport, after so much misfortune and oppression under two Lords, Orlin and Meldorath (a powerful mage who was believed to be dead), had finally been awarded a great Lord, Eldus Alderman, with ambition and plans for Hillport. What transpired next? Discoveries, war, deaths, escape or is Meldorath still alive?
I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars mainly because it was perfectly edited, there were no errors in the book. Also, because it was a simple read yet captivating. I don't rate it 3 because it is an exceptional book, and it does not deserve any less.
What I loved about the book was the intriguing start of the book. The description of the Emperor of Lullabies was captivating. The best part of this book was the beautiful quotes I encountered like "See the good in everything and the best of it will find you" or "With time, the waves of desire will flatten the sands of the earth." Also, the author, Matthew Tysz, definitely has great humor, appealing to an adult audience. I did not dislike anything about the book.
The book had a good balance in characters, both men and women. There were a few women mentioned though not major. The character that I liked most was Rowan, who was raised in the capital and was impervious to others yet showed an interest in Galen. There are a few grammar words that may require looking up, but most of them you would understand in the context of the sentence. Therefore, the book expands one's grammar.
I would recommend this book to adults strictly. It is not a book for kids. There are quite a number of instances of profanity in the book as well as other inappropriate words for children. Some religious aspects of the book might be offensive to others but mildly.
All in all, it is a great read, and I would recommend it.
