The most powerful elements of human nature such as hope and greed are beautifully illustrated in the book,We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. The story follows a young refugee’s journey from the Land of the Princes which is torn by a vicious war to the wealthy kingdom of Voulhire after he inherits a forge by a long-lost uncle. The almost perfect kingdom of Voulhire is slowly plagued by an unspoken darkness that lurks in the most unexpected places.

Having not read fantasy genres in sometime, this book was enough to get me obsessing of it again. It has a healthy mixture of science and magic and has the essence of a brilliant mesh up of Lord of the rings and Harry Potter. What I liked most about this book was the change in narratives between characters. One gets to peer into the lives of each of the different characters and learn through them. Galen’s grandmother words have become one of my favorite quotes: “See the good in everything, and the best of it will find you.” as well as the one Lord Eldus mentions “Blessed are they who earn their evening skies”. I love how both quotes fit the two characters and they're their view of the world around them

What I enjoyed the most about the story was the description of the battle scenes. Unlike most stories it was detailed yet short and to the point and did not leave me annoyed and confused, even with the use of magic during a fight. Despite having amazing fight scenes, the novel also touches on one's personal beliefs and those beliefs influenced by others which are often quite similar.

Although this book is extremely good and well researched there were some parts that left me confused for a while and that was which period or era was being depicted. At some parts it seemed very medieval and then mentions steam engines and machines that occurred in the later ages. This was the only part that I didn’t like, however this may not bother other readers and does not take away the essence of the novel.

The mysteries hidden within the kingdom of Voulhire kept me hooked in anticipation. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars purely because of the battle scenes, as I have mentioned earlier, I haven't read fantasy books because of the often confusing and long fight scenes that seems to describe every move and drop of blood. However, this novel exceeded my expectations in every aspect especially fight scenes. I recommend this book to those who enjoy stories with magic and intricate plots like those of Lord of the Rings. It is not suitable for children as it contains curse words.
