[Following is a volunteer review of "Strong Heart" by Charlie Sheldon.]
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a story surrounding the appearance of a new, young relative right before an important trip. During this trip into the wilderness, this young relative went missing for more than a week. When she reappeared is when the story truly begins to unravel. She tells what seems to be a tall tale that is impossible to believe. However, as the story progresses it is not a fictitious story at all. But the story being told is a wonderful adventure that sets the tone for the entire story.
The author did a great introduction of the characters at the beginning so that the reader can observe them grow throughout the story. I really enjoyed the vivid imagery throughout the book. It really helped me to fully understand the surroundings of the characters so that I felt more in tune with what was happening. I enjoyed reading about the struggles that each character dealt with on their own. The hardships that were encompassed in this book were very real and enlightening to me because they showed me how truly blessed I am.
I believe the transition between the reappearance of the young relative and the story she tells could be smoother because it was hard for me to understand why she was telling this immense story at the beginning.
I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I give this rating because it was such a great story and I really enjoyed reading it. Also, this book was extremely well-edited. I found no errors. I enjoyed reading about a time in history I would otherwise have never learned of because I have never been interested in the history regarding the Ice Ages. This book was not necessarily historic in nature, but some of it is centered around the Ice Ages.
I would recommend Strong Heart to readers that enjoy adventures pertaining to historical pretexts. This story entices the reader into wanting to do research outside of the novel to better understand the background. I really enjoy history and I was more than happy to do my own research to understand the story in greater depth. By doing my own research, I can understand the struggles of some of the characters in greater depth which really brought me closer to the story. I look forward to reading other works by Charlie Sheldon because he did such a great job in telling this story.
