We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book of the series. From the war stricken Land of Princes, Galen sets sail to start a new life by taking over his late uncle's forge. Once he arrives to Magnum Caelum, Galen is over joyous at the new opportunity and determined to make a new life for himself. Off in another section of the King's land, we learn of the most powerful wizard, Meldorath, who has taken over the town of Hillport. After he announced himself as the new lord, he was then captured and pronounced dead by the king. As the story continues, we learn the perspectives of multiple characters each with their own cultures, towns, perspectives, and outlooks on each event that has happened through out. We see that evil and fear are going to spread throughout the kingdom in the time coming.

I loved how the author wrote each chapter from a different characters point of view. The vivid descriptions make the reader feel as if they are in the kingdom of Voulhire. Matthew did great job with vocabulary in this book, he uses words you don't hear on a day to day basis, this helps the reader with the feeling of a fantasy novel. My favorite part was opening the book and seeing there was a reference guide and map. I wish more fantasy novels had maps and reference guides. I was able to see on the map where each city and character lived and we were able to see the way Galen traveled on the sea from the Land of Princes to Magnum Caelum.

While some may argue that this book moves at a slow pace, I believe it was perfect considering this was an introductory or prequel for the rest of the series. This book was packed full of background information about each town and character, and this will in turn help us understand the later books. I am excited to start reading the second book, The Fires of Virko.

I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars because of the exceptional character development, story line, and editing. Each character and scene was well written, vivid, and easily visualized. I found no errors in the writing, and the vocabulary used was exceptional.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre and is above the age of 14. This book does not have a standard fantasy plot line and has every component for the beginning of a great series.
