[Following is a volunteer review of "Love, Grandma" by Ann Morris.]
Love, Grandma by Ann Morris describes the loving relationship between a grandmother and her two granddaughters, Payton and Haley. It contains memories that the author, herself, had with her own granddaughters, including them playing with toys, reading books, and baking cookies. These events are illustrated in detail and explained through brief, rhyming text.
The illustrations in this book are very colorful and creative, and the text is displayed at exactly the right places so as to not be missed by readers, but also not to interfere with the images in any way. A central and important message is delivered to kids through this book about the importance of family, since the events of the book foster positive attitudes and excitement towards the idea of spending time with family members.
This book is clearly well-edited, since I didn't find any spelling or grammatical errors. Additionally, each new page brings with it a new experience between the grandmother and her granddaughters, which makes the book, as a whole, easy for children with various attention spans to follow.
I like that the dance moves mentioned in the text, such as the somersault and cartwheel, are illustrated within the same page where they are mentioned, which may help readers understand what the words mean. However, there are words, such as “Wreaths” and “galore”, which, I believe, are too advanced for children to know.
Because of the aforementioned positive aspects of the book, I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I believe that readers of any background between the ages of six and eight would be the perfect audience for this book since they would be able to read it for themselves without finding the text too easy. Younger kids may also read the book with the assistance of an adult.
