We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz was an enjoyable fantasy novel to read. The book read in the format of an introduction for a few main characters and settings that I am guessing we will read about in upcoming sequels. To summarize, the main character of the series, Galen, sets off to a faraway land and begins his life learning his true calling after receiving a letter from a relative he's never met who lives on the land. We follow him throughout his new life, learning his new trade and meeting other characters who learn to navigate their own new life callings.

The other characters we learn about later on will eventually connect to Galen as the story progresses. We read about their lives in a way that you would imagine a close friend telling you their intimate story. The author brings the characters to life as he expresses their moral struggles, social shortcomings, relationships, fears, and triumphant victories.

I appreciated how the author laid out the book. It was easy to read and imagine the settings and how the characters interacted with one another. The book also made me reflect on my own morality at times as the characters wrestled with theirs, which I appreciated. The author penned the characters in such a personal, intimate way, that I felt I was in the setting with them, watching first-hand what they were going through, and I loved the way he wrote how the characters overcame their issues. He did so in a realistic manner, not in an unexplainable or unbelievable way.

There was nothing I disliked about the book. It read well, had almost no spelling or grammatical errors, and small details appeared to be well-researched. There was quite a bit of profanity though, which could be seen as a negative to some, but I can understand why the author used the words he did.

Overall, I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars, due to the author's creativity, imagination, and for how robust of a book it turned out to be, even though it was described as an introductory novel to an upcoming series.
