[Following is a volunteer review of "Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)" by Barry Litherland.]
When the cause of trauma in the past comes back to haunt the future. Will you avoid and run from it, or do you face it head on? Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland is a C/T/M/H that is viewed in the eyes of Phil Tyler as he searches for the truth that'll bring justice. The book features colorful character and how they handle time and pressure when lives are on the line.
Phil Tyler is a journalist for the local paper, he investigates a seemingly random burglary but finds that it isn't as simple as he first thought, not only does it lead to a possible homicide, but it also involves Phil's childhood friends (Wayne and Tina). Thomas Oldfeild, the victim of the burglary, is left unconscious in intensive care while Wayne is in the police hot seat. A package that Thomas Oldfeild had, named "JAYDEE", went missing as soon as it was revealed and certain parties, both gangs and politics, suddenly made haste to acquire it. Phil finds himself in the middle of all the mess, having no choice, he seeks for answers like he usually does.
The characters sense of humor was gold, even at situations were Phil had his life on the line he still had the guts to bust out a sarcastic line. Wayne's bizarre and unique behavior made his moments a blast to read, people who didn't know him could never make up what goes on in his head and it adds mystery a readers delight.
A few key characters were not brought up again after everything was clearing up. The books genre is indeed C/T/M/H and the readers would have the opportunity to imagine what would happen next to those characters, but I would have loved to know for sure where they go on from there.
After turning page after page and finishing the book, my only wish was for it to have more. The book was fantastic, there were times I felt like I was on the edge and times where I'd smile without noticing. Although there were a few missing quotation marks, I had no problem understanding the book. I rate this book 4 out of 4 because of it's fascinating characters, exiting plot and well done editing.
This book would be loved by anyone interested in the genre, but I would hesitate to recommend this to someone who's under the legal age as the book does contain a few profanities. It's a book worth reading and I'd be a great start to people who plans on exploring the genre.
