Review by dev08sava -- We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End
Frustrated and tired, Galen, Demetrius, and Rowan rode back to Magnum Caelum to regroup and think. Demetrius was the most frustrated one since he could not save Virko. He then became more frustrated when the new and secretive eiodi did not want to help him out. Galen shared Demetrius’ concern and gave the idea of requesting a meeting with the king in Soulhire. Although both Rowan and Demetrius thought it was not a good idea, they trusted Galen and went to Soulhire anyway. Galen was excited since he also got the chance to explore the capital. Eventually, everything went wrong: attacks were happening everywhere at once, and Meldorath almost reached his goal. The chaos upon Voulhire had just started.
We are Voulhire: Someone Else’s End by Matthew Tysz is a short book that finally shows the problems in Voulhire clearly. I like how the kingdom’s political issue is highlighted here: it represents what is going on in real life. I just realized there were so much I did not know about the characters until We are Voulhire: Someone Else’s End. For example, Matthew Tysz never really revealed Galen’s backstory until the third book despite being the centre of the story. This book also clears up unrelated events from the previous books. The motivations of the antagonists are starting to make sense. For example, even though Riva has a lopsided principle, they have relatable reasons to do what they are doing. I like the quote from Riva on page 68 in the book:
The book is edited professionally: I found no grammar or spelling errors; the chapters are arranged neatly; the font size is suitable for us to read. Moreover, there is a list of terms at the end of the book for readers.“Voulhire was a machine: a growing device that grew for the sake of growth. And that meaningless growth yields meaningless rewards.”
Generally, I have no negative comment towards the book. However, I was a little bit confused about how Rowan suddenly got the first-person point of view in the book. Demetrius also got the first-person point of view in Galen’s chapter. Honestly, I can’t tell what is Matthew Tysz’s point on that. There were no hint or event as a result of that change of point of view.
Just like the previous books, I recommend this book for young adults. The sexual content and some battle scenes might be too uncomfortable for some readers. Although this is a short book, things are more intense here.
The complicated magical world still amazed me. All the dots from the previous books are starting to connect to form a line. The story is wrapped beautifully, so I think this book deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Every end of the book always gives us a cliffhanger that makes us want to read more.
