[Following is a volunteer review of "Strong Heart" by Charlie Sheldon.]
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an adventurous, legendary and intriguing story that revolves around Native American legends mixed with an interesting story that creates the main plot for this book.
Sarah appears at her unknown grandfather's door like an unwanted surprise. Tom is about to go with his Native American friends to the Olympic Peninsula and decides to take Sarah with him. It is through this journey that we get to know the characters and observe the consolidation of their relationships. Sarah seems to have a lot of problems on this trip and does not hesitate to express them. Myra and her father William (the Native American friends) join them to find the place where Tom's grandfather was buried. This whole adventure becomes more dangerous and disturbing when Sarah disappears. This simple camping trip turns into a life-changing experience for everyone. Sarah appears a week later covered in blood and mud and speaking of a spiritual quest. What happened to her? All through the book you keep asking yourself: Did they take Sarah on this trip or did she take them?
There are many things that I like about this book. First of all, the characters are very well developed and the reader can easily understand their personalities and actions. Second, the description of the Olympic Peninsula, both historical and physical, is astonishing. It can be easily seen that the author knows the place and understands it deeply. Third, the captions explained in the book are a great addition. They are well written and help you understand a lot about the story and the implications of the different characters in it.
What I didn't really enjoy about this book are the transitions. In some parts of the story, I got a bit lost and I think they could be improved. To be fair, the legends and past stories of the characters helped me to relocate and focus. It was something minor and something that can be easily forgotten with all the positives of the book.
The book had almost no errors and I think it was professionally edited. For these reasons, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is very well written and the respect and compassion for the Native American rights that are portrayed in this book are a very positive point.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy books full of adventure, legend, and fiction. The book is intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat for several moments. It is a book devoid of profanity, so I recommend it to teenagers and adults who want an interesting and fascinating story.
