[Following is a volunteer review of "Fish Wielder" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
Fish wielder by J. R. R. R. (Jim)Hardison is a fantasy novel. It is a parody of ‘hero’s journey’ stories like Lord of the Rings. Thoral Mighty Fist is a great warrior in the fictional world of Grome. His origins are a mystery to the residents of Grome. He goes on adventures with his companions, a talking koi fish named Bradford and a magical horse named Warlordhorse. When he is not doing an adventure, he spends his time brooding and drinking mead. In one of their adventures, Thoral and Brad defeat an evil wizard named Necrogrond and saves the elvish princess who is his prisoner. The princess develops feelings for the mighty warrior.
At the request of the elvish king, Elford, Thoral swears to find the leader of the Bad Religion who is threatening to destroy the elves of Grome. Thus starts Thoral’s journey, which comprises villains, magic, elves, dwarves, goblins, and all the other infamous creatures of fantasy novels. Dark secrets about Thoral’s past life are revealed, and they play an important role in the story.
The most distinguishing thing about Fish Wielder is its humor. The author uses the over-used hero tropes to make readers crack with laughter. For example, Thoral always goes to the edge of death before coming back alive by some or other miracle, just like in all fantasy hero novels, which generates humor. But the author didn’t leave the fantasy elements for humor. The world-building and backstory are good and engages the readers. The plot is very interesting with a lot of twists and turns. The climax is unexpected. It gave hint towards a second book.
The thing I liked the most about the book is the blend of fantasy and humor. The book makes the reader turn the pages with interest and at the same time enjoy the humor. Although the characters are parodies, they still have their uniqueness and their own voice. I especially like the character of Brad, the talking fish, and Thoral’s companion. His wit and smartness and his love for Thoral make his character beloved. All the dialogues are very well-written in this book. They are witty and humorous and give a great insight into the personality of the characters.
There is nothing I disliked about this book. It is very well-edited. There is no profanity and no erotic scenes. There is some graphic violence, but mostly in a comical sense.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is finely edited, and it is a very enjoyable read. I recommend it to readers who like fantasy and humor genres.
