[Following is a volunteer review of "Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)" by Barry Litherland.]
The dynamics of people and the various types of relationships they are in have always amused onlookers, and for all we know, might forever remain an enigma. From past interactions to the present, Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland reflects on the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly being part of our lives. Phil and Wayne's bond stems from their childhood past that gets more defined after a tragedy rips through their world. But it is also impacted by their friendships and foe-ships with children from their neighborhood and school. The unbroken thread throughout the storyline depicts the necessity to surround oneself with people to share trials and tribulations. No one wants to go through life alone, and none of us wants to go unnoticed either.
The ease with which Litherland succeeds in taking the reader on Phil's journey gives insight into his struggles - his limitations both as a child and as an adult - and the delightful sarcasm and humor make for a nice pace and flow in reading. There is brilliant individual character development in each chapter that opens a window and allows the reader to share in their evolving world. I love the build-up in mystery and couldn't wait to turn the page and get to the conclusion. At first, I thought the story would be dreary and heavy given the synopsis, but I was pleasantly surprised with how all the nuances came together in the book as a whole. Like any healthy, normal-functioning human being, I don't like bullies or unfairness. That said, the way that Litherland describes certain events and character traits in Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) underlines the all-too-real existence of these dislikeable issues in all societies.
The profanity in the book might disturb sensitive readers, but in my opinion, it adds to the dialogue and emotions with which the characters approach or deal with situations. "To each his own," as the saying goes. The scenarios and references of neglect and abuse are heart-breaking and might be unsettling to younger readers.
I give it 4 out of 4 stars because I genuinely enjoyed all aspects of this book and cannot say anything particularly negative about it. It seems that the book was professionally edited, which added to a smooth read. I would suggest this book to young adults and mature readers. There is enough mystery and drama to thrill readers, with more to be uncovered around every corner.
