[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second installment in the fantasy series, “Voulhire.”.The story picks up right where the first book had ended. After some time, Galen, our protagonist, had settled down as a master blacksmith at his uncle’s shop. However, per a request from Magnum Caelum mayor, Galen, together with his companion and close friend: Demetrius and Rowan, will now venture to the city of Virko to secure a trade for iron to boost trade in his town.
However, Virko is not the town that they had imagined. They arrived in Virko on the brink of its political transition and encountered supernatural interference with their visit. Virko was a town where peasants can become noble, but as it moves closer to becoming a capitalist society, will the previous powerful relinquish their hold? Are they as enthusiastic about this transition as the Virke people? Meanwhile, Medorath had decided on his next move.
I like that we are starting to see this series come together by this book. There are more elements of fantasy and magic being introduced in this book. We also see more serious themes come through, like issues about politics and philosophy. I enjoyed reading this installment; there were many moments where I didn’t expect a twist but have been pleasantly surprised. The author did a good job of differentiating the characters and creating a unique back story.
One thing I had hoped the author had done but didn’t happen is to tie up some loose end. A few things that happened in the first book, like Lord Erdus’s son, who escaped the family massacre, weren’t mentioned in the book; perhaps it will be tied up in a different installment.
I didn’t find any errors, and the book seems to be professionally edited. I give this book a 4 out of 4. Although this was a short book, it was fast-paced and excited with one twist after another. The author had done a good job of building a fantasy world with its unique character. I had a great time reading this book. I would recommend, however, to make sure to read the first book first. The two books are interconnected, and some information would fly over your head if you don't read the first one. This book is best fitted to someone who enjoys fantasy and supernatural books. I would also recommend this to a young adult and adult audience.
