[Following is a volunteer review of "Fish Wielder" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
First, imagine the most popular fantasy tropes mixed in one book. Second, imagine a hilarious plotline that doesn’t entirely make sense. Third, imagine scenarios that do not fit in with the context of the book but still work. Fourth, imagine a mighty hero with a fish as his sidekick. Finally, imagine a damsel, not so distressed, and a necromancer that just won’t die. Put them all together, and you will get Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.
Thoral and his companion, Brad, have been on many adventures together. However, Thoral seems to be tired of the routine and wants to be granted a hero's death. After going through his existential crisis, he is later thrown into a quest to vanquish the evil force that is killing the elves. Whilst journeying, he encounters necromancers, Pooja assassins, the Heartless One, Bad Religion followers, a princess who is in love with him, and so many fights that may or may not be Thorals last.
The story is fun and different from the usual serious fantasy books. I honestly wasn’t expecting a plot twist but was in complete shock when the author took a turn at the end. I thought that because it was a parody book that there would be nothing serious about it. Also, I loved the name of the characters and weapons. Some of them were normal, and some of them got me laughing at how absurd they were. The flying and talking squirrel, Tyncie CheeChaw CheeChee WeeWaw, was my favorite. Also, I liked how in nearly every single battle scene, Thoral nearly died. How could the mighty, tough, and unbeatable Thoral die? My favorite character in the entire book was Brad. Thoral saved Brad, a fish, from drowning. Let that sink in for a moment.
I loved Fish Wielder. I cannot think of any major negative points. The only minor negative point I can think of is the fact that the fight scenes are quite predictable. Although, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book. I also won’t deny I got bored towards the middle. So, reading the book took longer than expected for me.
The minor negative points did not affect the quality of the book in any way. Therefore, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is unlike anything I have read before. I found the book to be extremely refreshing. It's exceptionally edited as I noticed no errors at all. I sincerely wish there was a list of all the literary references in the book, so I can see if I caught them all or not.
This was an extremely fun and enjoyable read. I would recommend Fish Wielder to people who want a break from serious books and just want to laugh. Both teenagers and adults would have fun with this book. As a reader, it would be best if they’ve read Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Wizard of Oz, and other famous fantasy books. You will be able to understand more references that way. For example, The Fellowship of the Pudding.
