Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland is a fictional tale of greed, corruption, crime, mystery, and murder, a story told from Philip's perspective. Philip is a journalist and had two best friends, Wayne and Stevie. Stevie's life got cut short when they were just kids by Wayne's brother, Tyrone. Tyrone got incarcerated for his crime. Wayne and Tyrone were from a poor background. Now they are all grown, and Wayne is dating Tina Oldfield.

One day there is a burglary at the Oldfield residence, and Mr. Oldfield is badly injured. He is rushed to the hospital and is in a critical state. Everyone suspects Wayne, but Tina defends him and even lies about his alibi to the police, but someone saw him running from the residence at the time. Around the same time Tyrone got released from jail, Philip is kidnapped and beaten up so that he gives up an incriminating package from Mr. Oldfield's residence, which they suspected Wayne had. Philip gets an ultimatum which sends him looking for answers. Will he find who is responsible for the burglary? Was Wayne guilty or set up?

I like that the story alternates between their childhood and current life. It helps the reader grasp what is happening at the beginning of the book. I found Wayne to be an interesting character, more than the protagonist, Philip. I wish the author could have switched and written from his perspective also. I also loved that some parts of the story were relatable to current situations in the world. It seems somewhat realistic. I also appreciated the diversity in the race of the characters. There was nothing I disliked about the book.

I give this book a rating of four out of four stars. I found no errors, and it seemed professionally edited. I give it four stars because I loved the author's writing. At no point in my reading was I bored. The story was always at a climax up to the end.

I would recommend this book to readers that love crime and mystery novels. The story was full of it and had a satisfying ending. It could be suitable for almost anyone although, I would caution people who don't like to read about violence. It contains violence to animals, people and a bit of self-harming among the characters, which could trigger some people. Also, the book has a theme of crime and murder. There are vivid descriptions of murder in the book, which would not appeal to some people.

I loved this book too. I hadn't expected much from it initially due to the vague description, but I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. And I agree with you on Wayne being more interesting than the Philip. Great review!
