We are Vouhlhire-A New Arrival under Great Skies, is the first book in Matthew Tysz's We are Vouhlhire series. It tells the story of a prosperous country, Vouhlhire, and the various political games played by men in power at the cost of human lives. The story begins with a haunting but captivating scene—A powerful wizard named Meldorath, storms the castle of the Lord of a small village, Hillport, wiping out everyone in his path. He deposes the sitting lord and names himself the new Lord of Hillport. Scared of his power but unable to kill him because of their friendship, the King of Vouhlhire has Meldorath imprisoned and appoints a former judge as the new lord of Hillport. This sets the stage for a chain of events that continue to unravel for the rest of the book. Also contained in the book is the story of a young man escaping from the horrors of war in his homeland who eventually finds himself in a place very different from where he is coming from and he struggles to find his way with the help of an unexpected friend.

Each of these stories are told from the perspective of different characters through its passing chapters. At first, the stories seem disconnected but as I continued to read I started to see where each character's life is interwoven with the other. For example, the young man, Galen, seems to have a very different path until he encounters one of Meldorath's minions.

I appreciate the fact that although it seems to be set in medieval times, the language and mode of speaking used in the book is quite modern which makes it easier to read and relate to. The book has a map of Vouhlhire and a glossary that explains the meaning of made up words in the story which makes it seem less like a tale and more like actual events. The storyline is not dragged out, it goes straight to the core of the story which sets this book apart from most fantasy novels. I really have nothing negative to say about it.

I rate We are Vouhlhire-A New Arrival under Great Skies 4 out 4 stars. I found no errors which makes it exceptionally edited. There are few profanities and no erotic scenes. It does not glorify violence or paint gory pictures of death.

Fans of sword-and-sorcery will love this book. The violent scenes are brutal but not drawn out. Tysz uses word pictures to describe magic scenes in a way that puts the reader right there with the wizards. I recommend this book to readers from thirteen years and above. I personally enjoyed every page and I can't wait to read the second book in this captivating series.
