[Following is a volunteer review of "My Special Day in Jasper,Texas USA" by Jermaine Kenyatta.]
My Special Day in Jasper, TX USA by Jermaine Kenyatta is a children's book about a little girl named Martha Adams. The story takes place in 1968. Martha is the first colored girl in her town to attend a white elementary school. Martha asked her mother why she had to go to this school. Her mother told her that she would be making history and ending segregation in their town. Martha is only in fifth grade and doesn’t really understand what that means. Her mother also told her to ignore anyone that calls her names. On her first day of school, Martha felt like she was all alone. She was upset until she met her teacher, Mrs. Gannon. Her teacher was very kind to her and treated her well. When the school day was over, Martha could not wait to get back to her neighborhood and see her friends. Unfortunately, Martha’s friends gave her the cold shoulder. They said she thought she was important now that she went to a white school. Martha’s mother told her to just be herself and that would be enough.
This is an excellent book for older children. It teaches an important lesson about how people should treat one another. Martha was a brave and kind child. She had to deal with children and adults being cruel to her. Martha showed grace and dignity even as a child. At one point in the story, three boys made fun of her at recess. She just laughed and let it go. This book teaches children about an important part of history. This book also teaches kids about being brave in tough situations, being kind to others, and sometimes even seeing the humor in the situation.
There is nothing negative to say about this book. The author told Martha’s story in a way that is relatable for children. The story is told from young Martha’s perspective. The book highlights how the kindness her teacher showed her, had such a big impact on Martha’s life. This book will hopefully inspire young readers to treat each other with kindness. It is important for children to learn that their mean words can hurt others, and their kindness can be just as powerful.
I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I truly enjoyed this story. I did not find a single editing error which leads me to believe that this book was professionally edited. The author did a wonderful job of honoring Martha's memory and the struggles she went through. This is an inspirational tale of bravery and a tribute to those that took the first big steps towards ending segregation.
I recommend this book to older children. Very young children may have a hard time understanding the story. I feel that preteens and even young adults could benefit from the historical information and the important lessons about kindness and equality.
