[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Galen Bray, a refugee who had managed to escape from his war torn land under mysterious circumstances, finds himself in the capital city of Voulhire.
A city where magic, psychology and science are intertwined together to be each other causes.
Between discovering his past and marveling at his present, he slowly begins to learn about this new world.
A world which is prospering towards the golden age but seems to have a dark shadow lurking behind. From a secret group of criminals trying to leave ruin in their wake to a mage rumored to be dead but still very much alive in people's fears, Voulhire seems to be a kingdom of contradictions. But as the boundaries of magic and reality starts to blur it creates opportunities, for both the evil and the good that can change the world of Voulhire in either way.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a fantasy/ sci-fi book which manages to deliver to both the audiences. The flow of the story is nice. It isn't rushed or kept stagnant. The author, Matthew Tysz, instead of using a flowery and grand writing style has rather stuck to a simple one which works well to make this extraordinary fantasy world seem more real. The humour is consistent with the quiet flow of the story. The ending doesn't disappoint. And it most wonderfully sets the scenes of the second book in motion. All the characters left a kind of impact in their own way. The most intriguing thing about this book was the unique and interesting combination of technology, psychology and magic. The author presents the readers with the workings of the kingdom and how the people employ such new approach in their daily lives.
The book was well edited as I only found one error. The book was not action packed but it's detailed setting worked the same way to keep the reader turning pages. Matthew Tysz has done a great job in taking the reader on a journey and presenting Voulhire through different characters present in different parts of the kingdom. He has somehow managed to show the darkness of the shadow behind all the glimmering aspects the book presents at first.
There was nothing that I didn't like about this book. It is that well written.
This book definitely deserves a 4 out of 4 stars as it has something for everyone. People who enjoy slow buildup and suspense will really enjoy this book. The mystery and suspense in the beginning and the thrilling and disturbing ending is everything a fantasy reader can want. I would recommend this book to anyone who ever wondered about a world with technology touched by magic.
