[Following is a volunteer review of "A Walk Through the Grapes" by David Jackson.]
A Walk Through the Grapes by David Jackson revolves around the life of a young man named Jace from a small town called Willow creek who returns back to his town after many years at his failed pursuit of fulfilling his then dream. Life is strange for him as fitting into this town where he had once grown up and the only ever place he had felt like home proves to be a difficult task for when he left, he left behind a lot of people including the love of his life.
The family's wine business which is now run by his father who is hoping to pass the business down to one of his four children. Life goes on and all of a sudden a shocking event takes place leaving two of the family's neighbors dead.
Accusations fly around and Jace then stumbles upon secret tunnels behind the family home and discovers his parents along with his siblings trying to cover a terrible secret up. He is determined to solve it on his own while having to juggle his love life which has also taken unexpected twists and turns during the time he returned home.
The book had my complete immersion from the very start to the end. The author David Jackson has shown brilliance in the portrayal of the characters as each character had a distinct role in the story. He has also captured every emotion in the book with precision and kept it as real and unapologetically raw as possible. The title is ironic and plays a pivotal part in the relevance to the story. It had everything a novel needs from tragic romance to an edge of the seat thriller to friendship in an unlikely way.
The protagonist seems rather indecisive during some moments in the story and the relationship between a few characters could have been more detailed to provide a more exhaustive profile of the characters and their history with the protagonist.
I rate the book a 4 out of 4 . The book presented unforeseen twists and turns and was truly a delight to read. It never failed to have my attention for every page had a truly nerve wrecking surprise. The details for every single event in the book was particularly thorough. The way the author describes the doting relationship between Jace and his mother is truly beautiful and is a tear jerker . The author also has a few quotes in the book at the beginning of a few chapters which is extremely relevant and inspirational. The author truly brings and highlights the importance of family in the book. Most importantly the book enables it's readers to take something valuable from the book for their own lives .
This book would be enjoyed by adults and also young adults as it has mild sexual content and well as profanity and also because a mature reader could relate with it personally and can entirely capture the essence and the aphorism in the book.
