[Following is a volunteer review of "Flat Top Mountain Ranch -- the beginning" by James E Doucette.]
Flat Top Mountain Ranch -- the beginning is a historical fiction written by James E Doucette. The story portrays how hard work and perseverance can change your life for good! As the title stated, this is the first book of the series.
The story happens during the civil war of America where the Union army and Confederate troops were fighting against each other. Jack was with the Union army. Ty fought war alongside the Confederate army. Both of them had seen so much of war, bloodshed, and death. In 1863 Union army won. The members of the confederate army were released only after signing an agreement stating they will not participate in war activities in the future. Ty and Jack came out and headed to their hometowns to see how their folks were doing. Then they both decided to go West to start a new life, away from the war. They didn’t meet with one another until now, still made similar decisions in their life!
They first met with each other during their journey to the West. They instantly became friends. In the journey, they found each other’s trust, many friends, and love! Finally, they decided to become partners to run a ranch on Flattop Mountain. Will they succeed in their partnership? And will they succeed in marrying the girls they loved? To know the answers to these questions, I recommend you to read the book!
The writing is beautiful! From the beginning to the end, the story is engaging and catching! The characters are well written, and they interact with each other well. I love how the author described all the aspects vividly. I enjoyed the humor thoroughly. I loved the characters of Esmerelda and Flower, and I loved the happy ending! The book contains unique vocabulary because of which I learned many new words!
The book contains moderate to high profanity and some dark humor. I did find some ambiguous sentences but didn’t find any sexually erotic content. Depictions of violence, hunting, and bloodshed are present, but I think it was relevant to the timeline in the story. Finally, I would have enjoyed the book more if there is a bit more humor!
I rate the book four out of four. Due to the above reasons, I wouldn’t recommend this book to young readers. Otherwise, the book would be suitable for readers who love historical fiction, action, and adventure.
