Shadow, the family kitty, loves to watch the birds, patting the window glass, trying to capture them. When the children accidentally leave the door open, Shadow goes outside. He thinks he can catch a bird, but it keeps flying away just out of reach. He follows it farther and farther until he is completely lost. Shadow’s Adventure Home by Kathy Kovar is a heartwarming children’s story about a scared, lonely cat trying to find his way home. Will Shadow get back to the family he loves? What will happen to him when he is on his own?

This story is told from Shadow’s point of view. He is used to being indoors, comfortable and warm, seeing the world through the window. He finds being outside exciting at first, but then it becomes a frightening place, and he wants to go home. I thoroughly enjoyed Shadow’s adventure. Having two cats myself, I found his actions completely believable. I also liked he wasn’t a talking animal such as found in so many books for children. He meowed and purred, just like a normal cat.

The full-page color illustrations by Mardel Rubio are delightful. In muted tones, they look done with colored pencils. Shadow is drawn as a fat, happy black-and-white tabby, and his actual photograph appears on the dedication page. My only dislike is the way the people’s faces are drawn. With small eyes and unsmiling mouths, they don’t seem friendly. However, this was my opinion only, and other readers may think they appear more realistic.

This story was exceptionally well edited, as I detected no spelling or grammatical errors on its pages. I loved this story and wanted to hug sweet Shadow. I worried about him when he became lost and was completely engrossed in this story. Because it is exciting and well written, I am awarding Shadow’s Adventure Home by Kathy Kovar a perfect 4 out of 4 stars.

Children and even adults will enjoy this book. It should especially appeal to kids who like animal stories. Although it has an easy vocabulary, the number of words may prove difficult for beginning readers. However, more advanced elementary school readers should experience no problem. In addition, this would be an excellent book for parents or teachers to read aloud.
