Midwinter Turns To Spring by Maria Veloso is a romantic fiction novel set mostly in San Francisco spanning in time from the late 70s to 2003. Savannah a painter meets with Alfonso a flamenco guitar player over a painting of Alfonso’s grandmother that needed authentication. Their brief interactions become the birthing of a forbidden love because at that time Alfonso was married and had a daughter. Savannah took it upon herself to sever the relationship and go abroad for the sake of Alfonso’s daughter.

Twenty-six years later Casssidy becomes resident in the apartment that Savannah lived in San Francisco and she finds the journal that Savannah wrote detailing her affair with Alfonso. Having read the journal, she takes it upon herself to follow up on Savannah and return the journal. She also takes it upon herself to inform the now widower Alfonso on where Savannah presently lived. Their reunion is tainted by an accident that causes amnesia on Savannah. They together struggle through their challenges until love eventually conquers it all.

Midwinter Turns to Spring is a book for art lovers or as was in my case someone willing to learn new things. There are descriptions of how a painting gets authenticated, how old time artists painted over another painting upon changing their mind due to shortage of canvases. In music, there is information about flamenco, also, deeply emotional music that musicians in Italy play. It is all described as an insight into Italian musical culture together with the use of Italian words that are immediately translated into English. It is not a dull romance book at all.

The book comes with an interesting plot. It is not the uneventful boy meets girl, they fall in love, marry and live happily ever after. The main characters love begins as forbidden love. They spend a great part of their relationship apart but loving each other still. When they finally come together, even with amnesia, Savannah falls for Alfonso again. It is an extraordinary love story. It has a high dosage of romance.

What I liked about Midwinter Turns to Spring by Maria Veloso is how the book mixes the theme of art with that of love. It shows also at the end of each chapter the author puts a picture of what I assumed to be an apartment building that is a major setting in the book. It is the picture on the book’s cover. I did not find anything to dislike about the book. The book is also very well edited; I did not notice any typing errors disturbing my read. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to enjoy a good relaxing book more so to romantics. I would not recommend children to read this book. My rating for the book is 4 out of 4 stars.
