Review of My Only Sunshine
Have you ever read a book and had the urge to shield a character? To defend them? Those are the emotions this book evoked in me. I wanted to protect and shield Charlie and Jute from the horrors of the life they were born into.
My Only Sunshine is a book written by Lou Dischler. For most of the book, it was written in the first-person narrative, though it sometimes alternated to a third-person narrative. It was divided into different parts and the book focused on a boy called Charlie. The book contains over 192 pages.
Charlie Boone stayed with his memaw and pawpaw after his father was locked up in jail. He had a younger brother called Jute that he took care of, and together they got into all kinds of trouble. His uncle Dan had just escaped prison and was pretending to be a Bible salesman with his girlfriend, Lona. This career of theirs came to an abrupt end when he was discovered by a local pastor. Almost every member of the family had partaken in a sort of crime. Will Charlie and Jute follow in the footsteps of his family? Or will he carve a new path?
One of the things I liked about the book was how short the chapters were. Just enough to intrigue but not enough to bore. Another thing I liked was the setting, which plays an important role in every story. This gave life to the whole story, making it more enjoyable and relatable. It gave us a clear picture of how life was for our main character, Charlie. My favorite thing about the book was how the author depicted the workings of the Charlie's mind. The book was well written and worth every second I spent reading it. I believe the author's goal was to create a light-hearted and humorous story where a reader could get lost in and in my opinion, I would say he achieved that goal. There was nothing I disliked about this book.
The Boones, a family of criminal misfits, would snuggle their way into your heart before the last chapter.
One scene showed how clever Charlie was when the tire of his memaw's car disengaged from the car while she was driving him home. He took a screw from each of the other three tires, He even used bubblegum. My heart broke that he was born in such a family, I almost cried when he saw the bullets hidden in one of his drawers and took some. He never had the chance of enjoying the innocence of childhood being exposed to all the horrors of life without even knowing they were wrong. I think I must applaud the author for how detailed the book was. And although some parts were heartbreaking they didn't take away from the humor of the book.
This book was full of unexpected twists and turns. The characters, although different were developed perfectly. Although this book seems like a children's book I would recommend it only to adults because of the strong language, sexual content, and violence. I strongly recommend this book to those who love an amazing story doused in comedy. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars not because it was free of errors but because it shines brightly and would leave a mark on its reader. This book seems professionally proofread and edited. I found no grammatical errors.
